Romanek Exits CINDERELLA Film

Romanek no longer directing fairy tale re-imagining.

‘Never Let Me Go’ and ‘One Hour Photo’ helmer Mark Romanek is dropping out as director of Disney’s live-action ‘Cinderella.’

According to a source close to the revisionist adaptation, Romanek and the studio have differing views on how to tell the story, with Romanek’s take being too dark for a fairy tale ending.

Disney will now begin searching for a new director for the Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz penned film. As previously reported, Cate Blanchett is attached to play the wicked stepmother with Saoirse Ronan, Gabrielle Wilde and Alicia Vikander on the shortlist for the titular lead.

In a statement to Deadline, the studio said, “The team here at Disney respects Mark as both a director and a friend, and we hope to find something to work on together in the future.”
