Irish born Richard Baneham wins an Oscar for Visual Effects on Avatar

Irish born Richie Baneham won an Oscar tonight for his work on visual effects on Avatar. He is the only one of the 5 Irish nominations to win in his category.

Richard Baneham attended the Senior art college in Ballyfermot before leaving Ireland for LA. He worked as an animator on Brad Bird’s ‘The Iron Giant’ and worked as animation supervisor on The Chronicles Of Narnia and Lord Of The Rings.


Other Irish nominations this year included ‘The Door’, which was nominated for best Short Film, The Secret Of Kells was nominated for Best Animated feature, Peter J Devlin was nominated for his work on Sound Editing in Star Trek, and Brown Bag Films, had their wonderful animation Granny O’Grimm nominated in the best animated short category.
