OFFICIAL MOVIE SUMMARY
THE FIGHTER is the real-life story about boxer “Irish” Micky Ward (MARK WAHLBERG) and his unlikely road to the world light welterweight title. Based on a true story, THE FIGHTER chronicles Ward’s career and relationship with his half-brother and trainer Dick Eklund (CHRISTIAN BALE), a former boxer fallen on hard times and in and out jail, on the gritty blue collar streets of Lowell, Massachusetts. Regarded as a gutsy low level fighter, Ward achieved success against the odds overcoming trials including the demands of his family and Eklund’s battle with drugs to become a world championship fighter securing his title at Kensington Olympia in London. A perennial underdog throughout his career, Ward became world renowned for his devastating left hook and his ability to withstand punishment while waiting to land his trademark shot.
Academy Award Nominee Mark Wahlberg (Boogie Nights, The Departed) stars as boxer ‘Irish’ Micky Ward with Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, Terminator Salvation) as his half brother Dickie Eklund. Joining the cast is Academy Award nominee AMY ADAMS (Charlie Wilson’s War, Julie & Julia) as Micky’s girlfriend Charlene and MELISSA LEO (Conviction, Frozen River) as the family’s domineering matriarch Alice.
THE FIGHTER will be released in cinemas nationwide by Momentum Pictures on 2 February, 2011
