Jake Gyllenhaal tackles the role of Dastan, a rogue prince struggling to find some meaning to his life. When he encounters a mysterious princess, he soon finds himself on a perilous adventure to thwart the plans of an evil ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the very world itself. After accidentally releasing the mystical ‘Sands of Time’, Dastan must use the magical Dagger of Time and enlist the help of the princess if he is to prevent the end of the world and right his wrongs.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time isn’t the first movie to take a lesson from the world of games, this week Movies.ie recommends some movies that will get you in the mood for the release of the Prince of Persia movie and some gaming as well!
Silent Hill
The town of Silent Hill is considered one of the most haunted and loneliest places in America. The series of games first made their debut on the Playstation console in 1999 and have since gone on to spawn some of the most popular horror mystery games across all consoles. In 2006, a film of the same name was released, giving big screen life to the nightmares of the sleepy town. A mother distraught with her ill daughter and frustrated with the lack of answers to her ploy, finds some clues in her daughters nightmares, a town called Silent Hill. Leaving her husband behind, she soon finds herself lost and her daughter missing, can she rescue her daughter or will she too become just another lost soul trapped in the horror of Silent Hill.
Resident Evil
Zombies, viruses, and plots to destroy the world, you would be hard pressed to find a gamer who has never gotten their hands on a copy of the Resident Evil franchise. With the first game released in 1996, the movies followed similar plot to the series and even referenced little things for the game fans to pick up on. The Umbrella Corporation has been researching varios biological weapons, when the T-Virus is released, the host computer shuts the underground facility down and kills everyone inside, a team of specially trained soldiers are sent in to…deal with the crisis inside. Mila Jovovich takes on the role of Alice, a agent working for Umbrella and would reprise the role in three more sequels with the third being released later this year.
Lara Croft Tomb Raider
She turned the heads of many players, with her sleek, stylish and curvaceous pixelated body, Lara Croft is considered to be one of the most beautiful video game characters designed. With a thirst for adventure, enough moves to put Chuck Norris in his place and some deadly firearms Lara searches out some of the most perilous locations in the quest to uncover secret treasures and inevitable save the world. Angelina Jolie stepped into Lara’s hotpants when the movie was released in 2001. Lara encounters the Illuminati in her movie adventure and must race to get her hands on a ancient relic capable of controlling time. A sequel entitled Lara Croft Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life was released in 2003 and a third movie has been in the works since 2009.
Final Fantasy: Advent Children
Rumours of Square’s development of a movie sequel to probably one of the most famous RPGs (Role Playing Game) ever created, Final Fantasy VII, circled the internet for years, with speculation on actors cast in the various roles of some of the most beloved characters. It wasn’t until 2005 that we finally got to watch Cloud, Tifa and the whole party on the big screen, Advent Children takes off from where the video game finished. Cloud is dealing with his failure to save a friend, distancing himself from his friends and those who care about him and the world remains in peril when a plague known as ‘Geostigma’ infects the people of the world.
