As Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams team for Blue Valentine, we take a look at what indie romances will get your heart a flutter!
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Don’t let the fact Jim Carrey stars in the film sway you away from watching this darling indie romance. Based around the unsteady relationship of Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski, the film follows the pair as they both choose to erase each other from their respective memories. We’re lead through the mind of Joel as he begins to forget his darling Clementine, only to realise it’s better to have loved and lost…. Confused? You will be.
ONCE
Ireland’s own indie gem, Once still manages to get us every time! This charming tale follows the musical and probable romantic partnership of a Dublin busker and a Czech immigrant. Through them we are lead on a trip around modern Dublin from Howth Head to Mountjoy Square to Grafton Street all accompanied by this uplifting indie soundtrack.
LARS AND THE REAL GIRL
No stranger to the indie genre, Ryan Gosling’s Lars and the Real Girl should be a film that leaves you cringing as the star dates a life-size sex doll, and the town that goes to great lengths to protect hist fantasy. Thanksfully Nancy Oliver’s Oscar-nominated script delivers a subtle and heartwarming tale of a man coming of age. This is Ryan Gosling at his best.
BEFORE SUNRISE AND BEFORE SUNSET
Both these movies are equally brilliant and if you do decide to watch one of these, it is essential that you watch the other as well. Even though the movie was not too successful because it was felt that it did not have a definite plot, it has been said that the movie will pull you into the screen and make you feel as though you are a part of the discussions that take place between the witty characters.
