The cast and crew of Angels & Demons talk about The Illuminati in this video feature
The real Illuminati were an underground group of 2,000 freethinkers spread across Europe. Founded in Bavaria in 1776, the society’s members thought that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic.
However, many think that roots of the Illuminati go back much further to the 1500s, whose members held then radical views about science which, it is claimed, brought them into conflict with the church, which feared science would undermine some of its core beliefs.
It is believed that amongst its members were mathematician and astronomer Galileo and sculptor and architect Bernini. Galileo certainly came into conflict with the Catholic Church and faced the inquisition and imprisonment.
Galileo’s belief in Copernican heliocentric system, (the theory that the sun is at the centre of the universe and that the earth and other planets revolve around it) which was considered by the church to be very much at odds with scripture, and therefore heretical, led to him being put under house arrest.
In the below video the cast and crew of Angels and Demons talk about the Illuminati and their place in Dan Brown’s novel.
