As Bandslam hits our screens this week, movies.ie presents the top ten movie bands. Rock on!
Bandslam is released this week, following an unlikely trio of teenagers, nerdy loner, social misfit and popular It girl who bond over their shared love of music and unite to compete in the eponymous battle of the bands competition. The film stars three of the biggest names in tween-world, Gaelen Connoll, Aly Michalka and Vanessa Hudgens. With this cast of course Bandslam is going to be a hit with the kids but it also promises to be fun for music lovers and contrary to what you might expect from a Nickelodeon effort, the film actually has its musical heart in the right place; the soundtrack features such worthy fare as David Bowie, The Velvet Underground and Wilco.
The true test will be whether this young trio can hold its own against any of our top ten movie bands!
1. Spinal Tap (This Is Spinal Tap)
Spinal Tap are the undisputed champions of film bands – so much so that they have completely emerged from the film that spawned them and out into the real world; this year they even reformed to play Glastonbury to a rapturous reception! It’s no surprise though as this is the movie band that turned everything up to 11 giving us classics like Big Bottom, Stonehenge and Sex Farm, not to mention guitarist Nigel Tufnel’s emotional opus Lick My Love Pump.
2. Autobahn (The Big Lebowski)
Nihilists eh? You don’t know where you stand with nihilists. In the words of Walter “Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos!” Still though, it was a pretty natural career change for the band Autobahn – from German techno to nihilist criminals with a liking for ferrets. Autobahn in their red shirt/black tie combo were dead ringers for Kraftwerk and although we never get to hear any of their music we’d lay bets it had a lot of monotone vocals and industrial banging noises!
