There was never any doubt that ’50 Shades Of Grey’ was going to be a massive hit at the Irish box office, it’s been the most talked about film for weeks now, with every TV & radio show possible giving it a mention… The question was never would it be a hit, but how big of a hit…

In three days ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ has broken multiple records at the Irish box office, taking in 1.34m, which makes it the 11th biggest opener of all time in Ireland after Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Pt.2 (€2.05m), The Dark Knight Rises(€2.02m),The Simpsons (€1.97m), Shrek the Third (€1.81m, Quantum of Solace (€1.75m), Shrek 2 (€1.68m), Skyfall (€1.6m), The Dark Knight (€1.45m), Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone (€1.37m).

HIGHEST OPENER OF 2015
It has the honour of being Ireland’s highest opener of 2015, after Taken 3 grossed €712,061 and American Sniper grossed €481,322 in their first three days in cinemas.

BIGGEST FEBRUARY OPENER OF ALL TIME IN IRELAND
It is also the biggest February opener of all time, that record was previously held by Star Wars: Ep.1 The Phantom Menace which made €1.1.

BIGGEST UNIVERSAL OPENING OF ALL TIME
The controversial movie also knocked the stuffing out of poor ‘Ted’ which made €1.11m on its opening weekend two years ago.

BIGGEST 18 CERT OPENING OF ALL TIME
The previous 18 title to perform so strongly at the box office in Ireland was ‘HANNIBAL’ back in 2001. The movie which saw Anthony Hopkins return to play Hannibal Lecter made €889,222 on it’s opening weekend in Ireland.
