Maguire to produce and star.
Tobey Maguire is teaming up with ‘Compliance’ helmer Craig Zobel for an adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s 1974 novel ‘Z for Zachariah.’
“Ann Burden is sixteen years old and completely alone. The world as she once knew it is gone, ravaged by a nuclear war that has taken everyone from her. For the past year, she has lived in a remote valley with no evidence of any other survivors. But the smoke from a distant campfire shatters Ann’s solitude. Someone else is still alive and making his way toward the valley. Who is this man? What does he want? Can he be trusted? Both excited and terrified, Ann soon realizes there may be worse things than being the last person on Earth.”
According to Variety, Maguire is attached to play John Loomis, “a rugged scientist with a dark past.”
Maguire will also serve as producer on the adaptation, alongside his Material Pictures partner Matthew Plouffe. The screenplay, penned by Nissar Modi, was featured on the 2009 Black List of unproduced screenplays.
O’Brien’s novel was previously adapted by the BBC in 1984 as an episode of the TV series ‘Play for Today.’ The TV adaptation changed the setting from America to Wales.
