Welsh star boards Flaubert adaptation.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ star Rhys Ifans has joined the cast of the Sophie Barthes-directed adaptation of ‘Madame Bovary.’
Based on Gustave Flaubert’s classic tale, the film will star Mia Wasikowska as the title character, Emma Bovary, a married woman who impulsively marries a small-town doctor to leave her father’s pig farm behind. But after being introduced to the glamorous world of high society, she soon becomes bored with her stodgy mate and seeks excitement and status outside the bonds of marriage.
As previously reported Ezra Miller is attached to play her young lover Leon Dupuis, with Barthes’ ‘Cold Souls’ star Paul Giamatti playing Monsieur Homais, who threatens to reveal Bovary’s steamy indiscretions.
Vareity says that Ifans will be taking the role of Monsieur Lheureuse, a manipulative merchant who convinces Wasikowska’s Bovary to buy goods on credit and borrow money from him, eventually leading to her financial ruin.
