Tony-Winner Nina Arianda to star.
Deadline reports that Sean Durkin (‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’) is set to take the director’s chair for ‘Joplin,’ a film that will look back on the final six months of 1960s rock icon Janis Joplin’s life with flashbacks to her early career.
Nina Arianda (‘Midnight in Paris,’ ‘Win Win,’ ‘Tower Heist’) is attached to star with production to start early next year. The actress recently took home the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for ‘Venus in Fur.’
‘Joplin,’ which will be made for a budget of under $20 million, will include the use of 21 of Joplin’s best-known songs.
Producer Peter Newman (‘The Squid and the Whale’) told Deadline, “I’ve never in my life seen an actress walk on a stage and convey the duality of vulnerability with overheated sexuality, which is what Janis was all about.”
