Helmer to revive stalled drama.
‘Fast Five’ director Justin Lin has begun negotiations to direct the fact-based drama ‘L.A. Riots’ for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment reports Vulture.
First setup six years ago the project originally had Spike Lee attached to direct from a script by ‘Red Tails’ screenwriter John Ridley. According to an unnamed source the project fell into development hell due to budget issues.
The story centres on the 1992 riots in Los Angeles that erupted after six police officers were acquitted of the severe beating of Rodney King. The riots lasted for six days, resulting in 53 deaths and at least $1 billion in property damage.
It is unclear if Lin will be working from Ridley’s draft of the script or starting anew. Lin is currently busy shooting the sixth installment of the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise.
