Anton Yelchin (‘Star Trek,’ ‘Odd Thomas,’ ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’), Zooey Deschanel (‘(500) Days of Summer,’ ‘New Girl,’ ‘Elf’), John Hawkes (‘The Sessions,’ ‘Eastbound and Down,’ ‘Winter’s Bone’), and Northern Irish actor Ciaran Hinds (‘There Will Be Blood,’ ‘Agent 47,’ ‘Game of Thrones’) are starring in the dark comedy ‘The Driftless Area.’
Adapted from award-winning author Tom Drury’s novel of the same title, the story centres on the enigmatic Stella (Deschanel) and Pierre (Yelchin), a quietly resourceful bartender who returns to his hometown after the death of his parents. When Pierre falls in love with Stella, he is unwittingly drawn into a circle of fate pitting him against the volatile criminal Shane (played by Hawkes).
Zachary Sluser, who co-wrote the screenplay with Drury, is attached to direct. Frank Langella (‘Frost/Nixon,’ ‘Robot & Frank’), Aubrey Plaza (‘Parks and Recreation,’ ‘ Life After Beth’), and Alia Shawkat (‘Arrested Development,’ ‘The Oranges,’ ‘Cedar Rapids’) will also star.
Producers are Keith Kjarval through his Unified Pictures production/finance banner and Aaron L. Gilbert through Bron Studios in association with CW Media Finance. Nicole Romano at Anonymous Content is exec producing. Filming is underway in Vancouver.
