German auteur joins Tom Cruise-led thriller. Variety is reporting that eccentric German auteur Werner Herzog (‘Into the Abyss,’ ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams,’ ‘Grizzy Man’) has joined the cast of Christopher McQuarrie’s ‘One Shot,’ landing the role of the movie’s villain. The thriller stars Tom Cruise as antihero Jack Reacher, a former military policeman turned drifter who “gets sucked into the” investigation of a sniper accused of murdering five people before being captured. Rosamund Pike (‘Clash of the Titans 2’), David Oyelowo (‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’), Richard Jenkins (‘The Rum Diary’) and Robert Duvall (‘Crazy Heart’) also star. According to the trade, Herzog will play “The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war who arranges and stages the killing and is the head of the conspiracy.” Aside from cameos and the occasional voice-over work on ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘One Shot’ is the first major acting role for Herzog. ‘One Shot’ is currently in production, with McQuarrie (‘The Way of the Gun’) helming from his own screenplay.
