Tom Waits for The Hobbit December 9, 2009 Will Tom Waits be the voice of Smaug??? Tom Waits is rumoured to be starring in the upcoming film adaptation of The Hobbit. According to reporters the singer-songwriter may be playing the voice of Smaug – the dragon Bilbo Baggins faces off with at the climax of the classic tale. Other potential roles for Waits include Beorn, a dwarf who turns into a bear or Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf leader. Waits was last seen in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus as the Devil and is co-starring with Denzel Washington in The Book Of Eli.
