Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who is up for best actress at this year’s Academy Awards for her role in ‘Brooklyn,’ has signed on to headline the drama ‘On Chesil Beach.’

Based on Ian McEwan’s 2007 Booker-shortlisted novel, the film is set in early 1960s England and tells the story of Florence and Edward, a young couple who spend their honeymoon in a hotel overlooking stony Chesil Beach on the Dorset coast. Over the course of their stay, the expectation of their marital duties weighs over them.

‘On Chesil Beach’ is Ronan’s second McEwan adaptation, having previously starred in the Joe Wright-directed ‘Atonement,’ which earned the Carlow native her first Oscar nod.

Production gets underway in the autumn with Dominic Cooke (‘The Hollow Crown’) behind the camera.
