Renny Harlin and Kellan Lutz Teaming for HERCULES 3D

Helmer to tackle 3D epic.

It’s being reported, via THR, that Renny Harlin (‘Die Hard 2,’ ‘Cliffhanger’) has signed on to take the directing reigns of a big budget 3D epic based on Greek demigod Hercules.

‘Twilight’ actor Kellan Lutz is on board to play the title character, with the story centring on a love story between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules.

“It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality,” Harlin tells the trade. “He’s not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart.”

Simply titled ‘Hercules 3D,’ the $70 million flick is not to be confused with Dwayne Johnson and Brett Ratner’s rival project which will be an adaptation of Steve Moore’s graphic novel ‘Hercules: The Thracian Wars.’

Harlin and his producers are hoping to have their film in production as early as May so the film can hit cinemas ahead of Ratner’s film. Commenting on the subject of the competing projects, Harlin says, “I think these are very different kinds of movies in their approach to this legendary character. Obviously, Hercules has been portrayed in many different films, such as the Disney animated movie. I wish them luck. Ancient Greek mythology is an endless source of good stories … Let’s see both movies be successful.”
