Neil Marshall to Helm TROLL HUNTER

Redo locks in director.

English filmmaker Neil Marshall (‘Centurion,’ ‘The Descent,’ ‘Dog Soliders’) has closed a deal to step behind the camera to direct an English-language remake of André Øvredal’s 2010 hit ‘Troll Hunter.’

The Norwegian original focused on a group of students investigating a series of mysterious bear killings. They follow a mysterious hunter into the deep woods, learning along the way that he is a troll hunter, and that the creatures killing those bears might not confine their appetites to that species only.

Deadline hears that Marshall will also taking scripting duties on the redo, rewriting an earlier draft by studio exec-turned screenwriter Marc Haimes.

The remake, budgeted at $25 million, is being produced by Christopher Columbus and Michael Barnathan over at 1492 Pictures and CJ Entertainment, along with the film’s original producers John Jacobsen and Sveinung Golimo. The filmmakers are aiming for an early 2014 start.

Marshall is currently in Ireland working on the biggest episode of HBO’s fourth season of the hugely popular ‘Game Of Thrones.’ The episode is said to be on the scale of ‘Blackwater,’ the highly acclaimed episode he directed in the last series.
