Visual effect whiz to direct young adult adaptation…

Multiple outlets are reporting that Universal has tapped visual effects wizard Michael Gracey to direct the big screen adaptation of Laini Taylor’s best-selling novel ‘Daughter Of Smoke & Bone.’

Featuring a script by Stuart Beattie (‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ ‘30 Days of Night’), the young-adult fantasy follows Karou, a blue-haired 17-year-old art student living in Prague, who embarks an unusual errands for the family of loving, albeit inhuman, creatures who raised her. Karou gradually becomes aware that she is part of an ancient struggle between devils and angels and finds herself in a forbidden romance with a warrior angel named Akiva.

‘Daughter Of Smoke & Bone’ is the first in a trilogy, with the final book, ‘Dreams of Gods and Monsters,’ set to arrive on bookshelves spring 2014.

The adaptation will be produced by Joe Roth (‘Oz the Great and Powerful,’ ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’) and Palak Patel. Taylor and her manager, Jane Putch, will executive produce.
