Live Action CAPTAIN PLANET Movie in Development

Earth! Wind! Water! Fire! Heart! Go Planet!

It was announced yesterday that ‘Transformers’ producer Don Murphy is to team up with Cartoon Network to develop a live-action feature based on the environmental-themed animated series ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers.’

The series was created back in 1990 by media mogul and environmental activist Ted Turner and DIC Enterprises in an effort to inform younger viewers about serious environmental issues. It followed a group of young people who combine their special powers to summon Captain Planet, an environmental superhero, to battle the world’s worst eco-villains.

The show ran for six full seasons and featured the voice talents of multiple guest celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg (Gaia), Meg Ryan (Dr. Blight), Martin Sheen (Sly Sludge), Edward Asner (Hoggish Greedly), James Coburn (Looten Plunder), Dean Stockwell (Duke Nukem) and Sting (Zarm). ‘Captain Planet’ even popped up in Belfast for episode titled ‘If It’s Doomsday, This Must Be Belfast.’

Murphy will be producing alongside partner Susan Montford under their Angry Filmworks production banner. “With the earthquakes, tornadoes, melting icebergs and all the other problems threatening the world right now, Earth really needs her greatest defender,” said Montford.
