Jennifer Lawrence and Gary Ross Reunite for EAST OF EDEN Adaptation

Lawrence and Ross re-teaming for two projects.

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are looking to reunite ‘The Hunger Games’ director Gary Ross and star Jennifer Lawrence for a new adaptation of John Steinbeck 1952 novel ‘East of Eden.’

Set in the rich farmland of California’s Salinas Valley, Steinbeck’s sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly re-enact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Deadline has Lawrence up for the role of the main antagonist, Cathy Ames, the estranged wife of Adam Trask, and the mother of his twin sons, Caleb and Aron. Beneath her charming, attractive facade, she is an evil woman who manipulates and destroys people for her own amusement and profit.

Additionally, the trade hears that Ross and Lawrence are in development on an adaptation of Hannah Kent’s debut book ‘Burial Rites.’

Published this earlier this month, the book tells the tale of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829. The drama takes place between the murder and the prosecution of the case against a woman who is victimized and powerless against the forces trying to send her to a public execution.
