First Look Darklight festival

The Darklight cometh… and Movies.ie brings you highlights of the upcoming festival.

It’s that time of year again; the Darklight Festival will soon take to the streets of Dublin with a four-day event celebrating cutting-edge film, animation, art and technology. From June 26th to the 29th, Dublin will play host to an eclectic series of screenings, seminars, workshops and special events along under the guiding hand of its new Programme Director Derek O’Connor.

This year’s guest of Honor will be none other than George McFly of ‘Back to the Future’ fame. That’s right, Crispin Hellion Glover, the legendary actor, writer and filmmaker, will be present to perform his Big Slide Show live alongside screenings of his stunning directorial outings ‘It is Fine. Everything is Fine!’ and ‘What is It?’. Check out the trailers below.

The team here at Movies.ie is also very proud to bring you a special focus on award-winning British filmmaking team ‘Warp Films’ at this year’s festival. The tribute to ‘Warp’ will feature a workshop with acclaimed actor Paddy Considine, who will present a screening of Shane Meadows’ ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ and his own directorial debut ‘Dog Altogether’. Other events not to miss include ‘Dublin: the Movie’; curated by Lenny (Garage) Abrahamson, a team of brave  filmmakers will attempt to undertake ultimate moviemaking challenge: to create Darklight’s Closing Night presentation – an experimental documentary portrait of Dublin, in only 72 hours!
And if you think 72 hours is short, try the 15 Second Film Festival Picture Palace. Running at The Light House Cinema for the duration of the Festival. This custom-built, Art-Deco two-seater cinema will run a programme of eye-popping, lip-smacking, brain-tickling quarter-minute masterpieces from the likes of Roddy Doyle, Seamus McGarvey and Enda Hughes.

Other Darklight Highlights include:

• A very special screening of the 1982 cult classic ‘Tron’, preceded by a workshop with ‘Tron’ FX guru Ken Perlin…
• A night with internationally renowned cinematographer Chris Doyle…
• The Straylight outdoor visual art trail…
• Debut of the Irish Film Board’s Virtual Cinema shorts scheme…
• An exhibition of classic computer games…
• A special children’s screening of classic Irish animation, along with a ‘Morphathon’ claymation workshop for the whole family…

The Darklight festival, running June 26th -29th, will be held in Film Base, the Irish Film Institute and The Light House Cinema. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the IFI and The Light House.
