Director Hired for POLICE ACADEMY Remake

Yet another unwanted remake moves forward.

It’s been three years since we last heard anything on the planned remake of the long running ‘Police Academy’ franchise. Now Variety is reporting that New Line Cinema has tapped Scott Zabielski (‘Tosh.0’) to take the director’s chair.

The remake of the low-brow comedy will mark Zabielski’s feature directorial debut. David Diamond and David Weissman penned the screenplay and original ‘Police Academy’ producer Paul Maslansky is set to return to produce the remake.

Released in 1984, the first film starred Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney, a repeat offender who is forced to enter the academy and emerges as the group’s leader. It spawned six sequels, a live-action TV series and an animated series.

Interestingly, Zabielski is no stranger to the concept of police academy: He went through the academy and is a reserve police officer in West Hollywood.
