Benicio Del Toro is reportedly eyeing a role opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Inherent Vice,’ according to TheWrap.

A feature adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 crime novel of the same name, the tale is set in Los Angeles during the winter of 1969 and summer of 1970, and follows Larry “Doc” Sportello, a private investigator and “pothead” who uncovers a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer.

The site’s sources have Del Toro in talks to play Sauncho Smilax, an attorney who’s always trying to help Doc out of trouble. While not a major character, Smilax is expected to be a potential scene-stealer.

Filming is slated to begin later this month with Anderson, Megan Ellison, John Lesher and JoAnne Seller producing.

TheWrap’s report has no mention of the previously mentioned Charlize Theron.
