Banderas to Star in Chilean Miner Drama THE 33

Ensemble piece begins casting.

Antonio Banderas has closed a deal to star in ‘The 33,’ director Patricia Riggen’s ensemble drama based on the true story of the 33 Chilean miners who were tapped underground in a collapsed mineshaft for more than two months back in 2010.

Set to begin principal photography in the autumn, the ensemble piece also stars Martin Sheen (‘The Amazing Spider-Man’), Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro (‘300: Rise of an Empire’), and Jennifer Lopez (‘Parker’).

Banderas will be portraying Mario Sepulveda, the charismatic miner known as “Super Mario.” Sheen will be playing one of the miner’s fathers, while Santoro will take the role of a trapped miner.

Mike Medavoy (‘Black Swan’) and Ed McGurn (‘The Last Voyage of Demeter’) are producing with Carlos Eugenio Lavín and Leopoldo Enriquez serving as executive producers.
