Tom Hardy to Play VENOM In Spider-Man spin off

Shut up and take our money! ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘The Revenant’ star Tom Hardy has officially signed on to play Eddie Brock in ‘Venom,’ Sony’s long-awaited solo outing of the iconic Spider-Man villain.

Deadline adds that Ruben Fleischer (‘Zombieland,’ ‘Gangster Squad’) is in talks with the studio to take the helm for what they say is not a spinoff but the first movie after ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ from its Marvel Universe of characters.

Considered one of Spidey’s greatest enemies, Venom made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #300. The character is an alien symbiote who requires a host to bond with for its survival. After bonding, the symbiote gives his host body incredible powers.

Venom was previously played by Topher Grace in ‘Spider-Man 3,’ and Ryan Kwanten (‘True Blood’) in Joe Lynch’s unofficial black-and-white short ‘Truth In Journalism.’

Scott Rosenberg (‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,’ ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds’) and Jeff Pinkner (‘The Dark Tower,’ ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’) are on board to shape the script, while Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach produce with Amy Pascal. Eric Fineman and Palak Patel are overseeing development.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING swings into Irish cinemas July 7th.
