The lowdown on M3GAN 2.0

The world’s sassiest AI doll returns for a rematch that’s bigger, bolder, and deadlier than ever. When a shady defence contractor steals M3GAN’s tech to build a military-grade robo-assassin named Amelia, humanity’s fate hangs in the balance. Cue the comeback: Gemma and her now-teen niece reboot M3GAN, supercharging her for a no-holds-barred bot battle.

M3GAN was released in Ireland in January 2023, and quickly became one of Blumhouse’s biggest hits, with a worldwide gross of $180 million (from just a $12 million budget).

M3GAN isn’t just a cute name, it stands for ‘Model 3 Generative Android’. High-tech, high-drama, and all kinds of trouble!

“M3GAN 2.0” is a direct sequel to the 2023 techno-horror hit it picks up two years after the original film’s events. The story follows Gemma, now a bestselling author and advocate for AI regulation, and her niece Cady, who is now a rebellious 14-year-old.

Even though its set in America, New Zealand director Gerard Johnstone filmed the sequel closer to home in Auckland, which took 52 days of shooting.

OOPS! I DID IT AGAIN
For the first movie, M3GAN’s viral dance to “Walk the Night” made her a TikTok meme queen. Now, the sequel has cranked it up, debuting at the Grammys with killer moves to Chappell Roan’s “Femininomenon,” then stealing the show at CinemaCon as 30 lifesized M3GANs grooved to Britney Spear’s “Oops!… I Did It Again.”  Pop royalty meets horror royalty!

RISE OF THE MACHINES
M3GAN comes to life on screen thanks to New Zealand child actress Amie Donald, whose distinctive moves and physicality make the doll unforgettable. But since filming the first movie, Amie has grown taller, so producers decided to make M3gan bigger & heavier than before, with her computerised consciousness uploaded into a new body.

M3GAN CALLING…
If you’re an old-school cinema lover like us, you probably hate to see people on their phones in the middle of a film. But Blumhouse decided to flip the script for their 15th anniversary. At special screenings, fans were actually encouraged to go on their phones. Thanks to a wickedly clever M3GAN chatbot, moviegoers could chat with the killer doll herself, unlock exclusive content, play trivia, and peek behind the scenes, all in real time, right from their seats…

HASTA LA VISTA DOLLY
M3GAN owes her killer moves to none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic cyborg in 1984’s ‘The Terminator’, which producer James Wan cites as an inspiration. For the sequel, Wan took a page straight out of James Cameron’s playbook, “it felt right that the sequel would be ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’” he said recently “We knew that M3GAN had to meet a nemesis potentially more powerful than she is.”

THE HAUS OF M3GAN
Drag royalty meets demonic AI and slays the runway in a new video from the team behind Rupaul’s Drag Race that is high-camp crossover between drag culture and the viral M3GAN dance.
The promo unleashes the triple threat of Brooke Lynn Hytes, Jaida Essence Hall, and Lady Camden who serve up looks, laughs, and lethal levels of charisma that’s part runway, part robot uprising, and part camp perfection. Watch below…

SOULM8TE
The M3GAN cinematic universe is growing! January 2026 will see the release of a spin-off movie called ‘Soulm8te’ which centers on a grieving man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his wife. In his quest to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently transforms a seemingly harmless lovebot into a dangerously possessive and lethal soulmate.

M3GAN 2.0 arrives in Irish cinemas on June 27th
