Neill Blomkamp Developing ROBOCOP Sequel/Reboot

Robocop will return. The always-reliable Mike Fleming Jr over at Deadline is hearing word that MGM has enlisted Neill Blomkamp (‘District 9,’ ‘Chappie,’ ‘Elysium’) to develop a new installment of ‘RoboCop.’

Starring Peter Weller and Nancy Allen, the Paul Verhoeven-directed original was a satirical sci-fi action thriller set in a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, where a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories.

Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the new ‘Terminator’ film, is on board to rewrite a script by original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. The pair penned their script years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s 1987 hit, but the project never saw the light of day. The new film will have no connection to Jose Padilhas’ 2014 reboot starring Joe Kinnaman.
