Mark Romanek Checks In To THE OVERLOOK HOTEL for THE SHINING Prequel

Get ready to return to the iconic hotel…

The folks over at Variety are hearing that ‘Never Let Me Go’ and ‘One Hour Photo’ filmmaker Mark Romanek has signed on to take the helm of ‘The Overlook Hotel,’ Warner Bros’ long-in-the-works prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining.’

Famously adapted to the big screen from Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name, ‘The Shining’ revolved around Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the winter caretaker at the ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel. When he arrives there with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd), they learn that the previous caretaker had gone mad. Slowly Jack becomes possessed by the evil, demonic presence in the hotel.

‘The Overlook Hotel’ is based on King’s ‘Before the Play,’ a prologue to ‘The Shining’ originally published in Whispers magazine. The prequel details the construction of the Overlook Hotel and the violently disturbing events that befell the family of its original owner, Bob T. Watson.

Glen Mazzara (‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘The Shield’) is providing the script with Mythology’s Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis producing.
