Andrew Garfield Joins Martin Scorsese’s SILENCE

Ken Watanabe also on board.

Andrew Garfield (‘The Amazing Spider-Man’,’ ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Never Let Me Go’) has been tapped to play the lead in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s 17th Century-set novel ‘Silence,’ reports Variety.

Scheduled to begin filming July 2014, the story follows Father Sebastião Rodrigues (Garfield), a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit who travels to Japan with a fellow priest to locate their mentor and spread the gospel of Christianity.

Joining Garfield for the period drama is Ken Watanabe (‘Godzilla,’ ‘Inception,’ ‘Batman Begins’), who will portray Rodrigues’ interpreter. Japanese actor Issei Ogata is attached to co-star.
