Mel Gibson Heading To HACKSAW RIDGE With Andrew Garfield

Gibson and Garfield may team for WWII drama…

Mel Gibson (‘The Expendables 3,’ ‘Apocalypto’) is reportedly set to take the director’s chair for ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ a drama based on the true story Desmond T. Doss, a US Army medic who was the first “Conscientious Objector” to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Drafted in 1942, Doss refused to kill or carry a weapon because of his personal beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist. He consequently became a medic, and made himself a legend when he saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa, evacuating the wounded and tending to soldiers on the field.

The folks at THR hear that ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ star Andrew Garfield is in talks for the role of Doss.

David Permut (‘Struck by Lightning,’ ‘Charlie Bartlett’) and Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson (‘Rush,’ ‘The Woman in Black,’ ‘Black Swan’) are producing.
