Long gesting project finally gets moving.

‘Smashed’ director James Ponsoldt has been tapped to direct the long in development coming-of-age dramedy ‘The Spectacular Now,’ and according to Variety, Shailene Woodley (‘The Descendants’) is attached to play the female lead.

Adapted from Tim Tharp’s award-winning novel of the same name, the story follows a teenage girl who convinces an alcoholic high school senior that his philosophy of “living in the moment” may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

The screenplay was penned by ‘500 Days of Summer’ scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, who are also producing, alongside Tom McNulty and Marc Shmuger of Global Produce and Shawn Levy.
