Ree Dolly, 17 years old, struggles with poverty, trying to keep her family together in a rural area as the result of an absentee father and a withdrawn and a depressed mother. She is dealt a further blow when the local Sheriff tells her that her father has put up their meager house as collateral for his bail – if he doesn’t attend his trial in one week, the house will be taken from them. Knowing her father is involved in the local drug trade, she does her best to track him down to resolve the issue – but her search is confronted with the same message at every turn: stay out of it and stop poking your nose in other people’s business. Determined, she refuses to back down or give up, even after her father’s brother, Teardrop, tells her he’s probably been killed. She pushes on, putting her own life in danger, for the sake of her family until the truth, or enough of it, is revealed.
