William Monahan to Adapt THE THROWAWAYS

Deadline’s Mike Fleming hears that Paramount Pictures and Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (‘The Gambler,’ ‘Mojave,’ ‘The Departed’) are set to team for ‘The Throwaways.’

The film is based on the 2012 New Yorker article by Sarah Stillman, which detailed the stories of young offenders who are enlisted by the cop as informants for high-risk assignments.

One such case in the article involved Florida State University graduate Rachel Hoffman, who was caught with five ounces of pot and a couple Ecstasy and Valium pills. The 23-year-old was sent to buy a gun with $13,000 in marked bills, but ultimately lost contact with the cops who were supposed to be tailing her. Hoffman was found shot to death two days later.

In addition to writing the script, Monahan will produce the film through his Paramount Pictures-based banner, Henceforth Pictures.
