Helmer set for post-Apocalyptic action thriller. THR reports that Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (‘Dead Snow’) has signed up to direct Gerard Butler in the long-gesting adaptation of the Red 5 Comics mini-series ‘Afterburn.’ Penned by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood, the comic is set in a post-Apocalyptic world where a solar flare has burnt half of the planet. Buried beneath the ash and rubble are priceless artifacts and some of the world’s most valuable works of art – for which wealthy Americans will pay any price. Butler is set to play the lead, a treasure hunter who leads his team into the quarantine zone, braving rival bounty hunters, rogue armies, pirate gangs and deadly mutants along the way. ‘Afterburn’ will be produced by Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Tobey Maguire and Ryan Kavanaugh.Wirkola’s English-language debut, ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton is slated for release January 2013.
