Todd Haynes to Direct CAROL with Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska

John Crowley no longer involved.

Screen Daily reports that Oscar nominated filmmaker Todd Haynes (‘I’m Not There,’ ‘Far From Heaven,’ ‘Velvet Goldmine’) has stepped in take the director’s chair for the Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska-toplined drama ‘Carol,’ replacing Irish filmmaker John Crowley who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 romance novel ‘The Price of Salt,’ the plot follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. One, Therese Belivet, a girl in her twenties working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life, and the other, Carol Aird, a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.

Elizabeth Karlsen will produce alongside Number 9 Films partner Stephen Woolley, and Haynes’ regular collaborator Christine Vachon. Screenwriter Phyllis Nagy is penning the adaptation.
