Susanne Bier to Direct MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS with Saoirse Ronan

Director in talks for biopic.

Screen Daily has learned that Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (‘Love Is All You Need,’ ‘After the Wedding’) has entered into talks to direct Saoirse Ronan in the period drama ‘Mary Queen of Scots.’

The film follows the life of the eponymous Queen Mary, who famously tried to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, a move which was supported by many Catholics but saw her condemned in later life to years of imprisonment and finally execution.

‘Elizabeth’ and ‘The Tudors’ scribe Michael Hirst is working with playwright Penelope Skinner (‘How I Live Now’) on the script with the aim of having the film before cameras sometime next year.
