Stephen Frears to Direct Lance Armstrong Biopic Starring Ben Foster

John Hodge to provide script.

Mike Fleming over Deadline is hearing that British filmmaker Stephen Frears (‘Philomena,’ ‘’Lay The Favourite,’ ‘The Queen’) is set to direct Ben Foster in an biopic based on disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong.

Scripted by ‘Trainspotting’ screenwriter John Hodge, the untitled film chronicles Armstrong’s career from his cancer ordeal to the doping scandal that enveloped the Tour de France and led to the downfall of the 7-time champion.

Frears is reportedly looking to begin shooting the film in the autumn with Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner producing.

The film is the third project in development that is based on Armstrong. Warner Bros. has Jay Roach set to direct an untitled project scripted by ‘Side Effects’ scribe Scott Z. Burns, while Paramount is working away on its own project with Bad Robot partners JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk, with Bradley Cooper being eyed to portray Armstrong.
