SLC PUNK! Sequel Turns To Fans For Funding

Writer/director James Merendino has turned to crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo to help raise financing for ‘Punk’s Dead,’ the long awaited sequel to his 1999 cult classic ‘SLC Punk!’

For those unfamiliar with the original film, ‘SLC Punk!’ follows the daily lives of college graduate Steven “Stevo” Levy (Matthew Lillard) and his best friend, “Heroin” Bob (Michael Goorjian), the only two dedicated punks in the conservative society of 1980s Salt Lake City.

The sequel, tentatively set to short March/April 2014, catches up with the main characters 18 years after the events of the first film and Merendino has revealed that he is hoping to bring back most of the original cast, including Lillard, Goorjian, Devon Sawa, Annabeth Gish, James Duval, Til Schweiger, and Christopher McDonald.

“The thing I find appealing about crowd sourcing is that it’s a way for everybody to join the party, we are all VIPs, we are all big shots. Indiegogo is an amazing conduit for us to do this. Plus I really like the word gogo, it reminds me of girls dancing in giant bird cages,” said Merendino. “That said, I am really looking forward to getting on the set, making this movie. I’m excited to collaborate again with some old friends, as well as new friends like Branden Steineckert, who will definitely help me put together a killer soundtrack.”

You can find the latest updates on the sequel’s status via the IndieGoGo campaign and official Facebook page.
