Seven Great Movie Sorcerers

As The Sorcerer’s Apprentice hits cinemas, Movies.ie looks at seven of its favourite movie sorcerers

Darth Vader

“Don’t try to frighten us with your sorcerer’s ways, Lord Vader.” Yes, Jedi is really just another word for sci-fi sorcerer and who better then the shiny suited Darth Vader. True the Emperor held a higher rank and more power but Vader was the true force to be reckoned with all six movies were based around him.

Gandalf

Perhaps the most infamous wizard from the literary world, Gandalf is a favourite both in book form and in the big screen realisation by classic English thesp Sir Ian McKellen. Why he’s a favourite – who can really forget the 2,000-year-old wizard as he single-handedly took on the Balrog or his equally brilliant returned from dead as Gandalf the White?

Severus Snape

Severus Snape’s true intentions provide much debate for Potter heads. The stern head of Slytherin House takes a fiendish interest in bullying Harry and studying the Dark Arts. Still Snape’s mysterious quality, coupled with his sharp black attire earns him a spot on the list!

The Wizard of Oz

So infamous an entire movie was named after him, the menacing voice of the Wizard of Oz struck fear into the hearts of our deterimed heroes who braved the yellow brick road to find him. As it turned out the Wizard of Oz was not a real wizard at all, merely a man with a keen understanding of technology. Still he successfully managed to grant the wishes of each adventurer or at least convince them they had such abilities all along…

Willow

A sorcerer-in-training, while Willow may not be all powerful , his determination, intelligence, and courage in the face of adversity more than make up for his uh…shortcomings, and allowed him to stand up to the evil Queen Bavmorda and save Elora Danan.

Jareth, the Goblin Kin

While David Bowie’s powers only manifested themselves as crystal orbs, illusions, and transmogrification, Jareth is the cause of quite an adventure for Sarah Williams as she sets about on a quest to navigate the treacherous Labyrinth in search of her lost baby brother. Jarleth makes the list both for his magic and his “dance magic dance”.

Howl

The mysterious wizard Howl, commander of a walking castle propelled by a talking flame, must stop a war while simultaneously battling his steadily weakening condition and a secret contract confining his heart. Brilliantly realized by Hayao Miyazaki, the entire world of Howl’s Moving Castle reflects wonderfully creative magic and sorcery, and reveals a gripping story of good versus evil filled with love, humor, and adventure
