Sean Penn is to be formally offered the role of Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen in the period crime drama ‘Gangster Squad.’ The movie will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (‘Zombieland’) with a script by Will Beall.
Ryan Gosling is also being offered a role in the movie; the actor would be joining the movie as one of the two cops leading a squad of elite officers assigned to bring Cohen down.
The drama, based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman, is the fact-based tale of the crime fighting exploits of a squad of elite Los Angeles officers in the 1940s charged with stopping Cohen and other mobsters.
