Acting is first rate, with a stellar turn by Aksel Hennie, and direction by Morten Tyldum is solid. I love seeing a terrific film from a Norway.

Here it is - the first truly bad film of the year.

One of the things I liked about this movie is that it has nice little touches of humor. The visual effects (I saw this in 3D) are quite convincing. The acting is effective.

It never really gets under the skin in the way Cronenberg does at his best.

Payne manages to give the film a lightness that makes it uplifting or at the least fulfilling, rather than depressing.

Genial feelgood story inspired by a true story that made headlines in 1988.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

A mixed bag of intelligent tragedy and poor choices, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close has the ability to tug at the heart strings - it just gets them a bit tangled.

The Thing

It's not rocket science, but The Thing does offer solid cheap thrills for the slick gore crowd, proving once again: Horror doesn't have to be horrible.

I would never call this version a classic, but I was fairly entertained by it. Should a sequel be made, as the ending so clearly anticipates, I would happily go to see it.

It all builds, very slowly but powerfully, to an harrowing, gripping climax.

Beginners is perceptive, funny and moving.

An unusually upscale, and surprisingly satisfying, action film.
