PRISONERS Director Planning Mexican Border Crime Drama SICARIO

Villeneuve eyes female-driven crime drama…

Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (‘Prisoners,’ ‘Incendies’) is said to be circling the director’s chair for ‘Sicario,’ a “tense Mexican border crime drama” penned by former ‘Sons of Anarchy’ actor Taylor Sheridan.

Per Deadline, the drama focuses “on the murky legal loophole that allows mercenaries to breach the border of Mexico to corral drug kingpins, as long as they are accompanied by a legitimate law officer. In this case, a female cop from Tucson accompanies two delta force-type rangers across the border to apprehend a drug lord. Once across the border, the cop finds she has stepped into ‘No Country For Old Men terrain,’ with violence and depravity she never imagined.”

Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill will finance and produce via their newly formed Black Label banner, with Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road co-producing.

Villeneuve’s next offering, the Jake Gyllenhaal double-starrer ‘Enemy,’ arrives in Irish cinemas February 2014.
