German director Philipp Stölzl (‘North Face,’ ‘Young Goethe in Love’) has cast Tom Payne (‘Luck,’ ‘Pettigrew Lives for a Day’), Ben Kingsley, Stellan Skarsgård, Olivier Martinez (‘Unfaithful,’ ‘S.W.A.T.’) and Olivier Martinez for his medieval period drama ‘The Physician,’ reports THR.
Based on Noah Gordon’s best-selling novel, the film is set in Persia in the 11th Century and centres on Rob Cole (Payne), a physician in search of the scientific truth of illness and healing in a medieval world dominated by religion and superstition.
Kingsley is to play Ibn Sina, the so-called “doctor of all doctors” while Skarsgård will play Barber, Cole’s first mentor. Martinez will take the role of the Shah Ala ad-Daula.
Production is scheduled for next month in Morocco and Germany with a screenplay by Jan Berger (‘We Are The Night,’ ‘The Door’).
