“The characters I love will return,” del Toro told BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman are expected to reprise their roles,

In addition to confirming the sequel, del Toro revealed that an animated series based on ‘Pacific Rim’ is also in development. You can watch del Toro’s announcement video below.

Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ centres on a defence force consisting of massive robots called Jaegers and their human pilots who are fighting to save humanity from monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, who are invading from an other-worldly dimension. The film, released in July 2013, grossed a total of $411 million worldwide.
