Oscars gets longers

Next year’s Oscars shortlist set to double

Next year’s Oscar ceremony could be even longer than usual after organisers announced that the best picture shortlist is doubling in size.

Instead of the five films of recent years, there will be 10 nominated movies in the category.

Announcing the change, Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said that a recent bumper crop of films made them re-evaluate the situation.

“We nominated five, but there were many other great films last year,” he said.

Mr Ganis suggested that the extra space on the longer shortlist may be filled with genres often overlooked.

“Everybody says the academy will never nominate a comedy. Well maybe we will,” he said.
