Robert De Niro to play Vince Lombardi in feature film

Robert De Niro has signed up to play Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi in a feature film.


The film will reportedly focus on Lombaardi's career, which saw him led the Packers to five league championships during his nine years as head coach from 1959 to 1967.


ESPN Films is producing the project, titled Lombardi. No director or writer has been confirmed for the project.


De Niro has also recently signed to star in a sequel to Midnight Run and  the suspense thriller Dark Fields.

    I've only really enjoyed two American football films, Friday Night Lights and Any Given Sunday, but without knowing who this guy is, his history, or the team involved, it's not going to have much appeal outside of the States. Even with De Niro attached.

    American Football film. I think I'm out. I've nothing against them but you can spell American football without American, and I'm Irish so doubt I'll enjoy this.
