Originally when I heard the concept of an Avengers movie I was wary, but as Marvel rolled out the introductory movies, they slowly began to dispel my doubts and as nerd god Joss Whedon was at the helm, there was little doubt in my mind that this would be a masterpiece. It is 2 and a half hours of sheer comic book fun. Each character is given a very share of screen time and almost all have the chance to deliver a great line. For me the casting of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk was surprising but finally Marvel have found their big screen version of the characters. Ruffalo took it one step further than the previous incarnations and was brilliant in the role and the Hulk biits are probably some of the best in the movie. The rest of the cast are great too. If you are a fan of action movies you will enjoy this and fans of the comics will not be disappointed either. Well worth spending 2 and a half hours in a dark room with some smelly geeks.

Marvel have gradually been building up to Avengers Assemble. From the first hint at the end of Iron Man, each subsequent film from Marvel has teased us. Now they deliver on their promise by assembling Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Nick Fury, Hawkeye and Black Widow for a film that can simply be described in two words: it rocks. The plot continues the story of Thor's evil half-brother Loki, who is now intent on world domination by leading an alien force to take over the Earth. Only one group stands in its way: the Avengers Initiative. Director and Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon tosses a lot of balls in the air with this film, but somehow he manages to not only juggle them but keep them from falling. Each character is given their own individual moment to shine, so no character feels short-changed in the battle of egos and personalities. There are some pacing issues though - the second act onboard S.H.I.E.L.D's flying battleship tends to drag as Nick Fury works on uniting his disparate team. However, the film quickly shifts into fifth gear for a furious finale in and around the New York skyline that makes Battleship look like a playground scrap. Marvel are very clued-in to their audience and it shows. Long may they continue making rousing entertainment like this. Highly recommended.
