James Cameron’s Titanic is an epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic, the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the largest moving object ever built. She was the most luxurious liner of her era -- the “ship of dreams” -- which ultimately carried over 1,500 people to their death in the ice cold waters of the North Atlantic in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

TITANIC 3D (USA/12/194mins)
Directed by James Cameron. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Gloria Stuart, Bill Paxton, Bernard Hill.
THE PLOT: April 10th, 1912, and the towering RMS Titanic is setting sail on its maiden voyage, from Southampton to New York, 17-year old Rose DeWitt Bukater (Winslet) none too keen to last the journey, being forced into marrying steel tycoon Cal (Zane) by her mother (Fisher). Pulling Rose back from the edge – in more ways than one – is artist and drifter Jack Dawson (DiCaprio), the two striking up an unlikely friendship. And an unwelcome one, as far as Cal is concerned, becoming determined to keep these two free spirits away from one another. By any means necessary. But soon, there’s a bigger problem on the horizon…
THE VERDICT: A film that can still melt the heart or turn the stomach, depending on your disposition, there’s no denying that Titanic offers up a seductively old-fashioned love story on a truly epic scale. Sure the dialogue is corny, and the characters thinly-painted (Billy Zane has a face that will never win the girl), but Titanic didn’t become the biggest grossing movie of all time (for 12 years, until Avatar pushed it to no.2) just because of some clever marketing and state-of-the-art special effects. Dicaprio was a crucial part of that success, having pumped up many a tire with Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet the year before, the repeat viewing that assured the humungous box-office take for Titanic largely down to the tragic love story. And it’s still just as effective in 3D. Depending on your disposition, of course. RATING: 4/5
