Movies.ie Critic Review

Banished to earth by his angry father (Hopkins) - after a sly plot by his jealous brother (Hiddleston) - during his time on our fair planet, Thor (Hemsworth) finds himself an object of some fascination, and gradually, affection, for astrophysicist Jane Foster (Portman). Now, if only he can get his beloved hammer out of that rock. And stop his megalomaniacal brother destroy Asgard…

THE VERDICT: This $150m, two-and-a-half-years in the making comic book adaptation is the latest in Marvel’s ongoing box-office onslaught, the idea being, by the time their various superheroes (including Iron Man and Captain America) unite for 2012’s The Avengers,  the world will be just one big ComicCon convention. Well, Thor is one of those big blockbuster movies that neither entirely works nor entirely sucks, being absolutely enjoyable without being particularly memorable. Hemsworth (who looks like Brad Pitt on some serious steroids) is solid as the God of Thunder, handling the comedy just as well as the action, but the CGI is weak, the mythical Asgard looking like Metropolis redesigned by Liberace. Which won’t stop it from taking a huge chunk of the summer box-office, of course.

This movie is AMAZING!! I love how Marvel is coming out with a lot of different Marvel movies this year. This one definetly goes on the top of my favorite list! But at the end of the movie it's kind of sad, but looking forward to seeing Thor in the Avengers movie coming out next year!

Excellent watch and with name drops such as Ironman and Hulk it is a real Avengers tease. Would gladly pay to see again.

A very enjoyable experience, with splendid visuals and a great dose of witty humor. Thor is a very entertaining flick and much better than the majority of other Marvel superhero movies that have been circulating.

Considering all the bad press this movie got I was pleasantly surprised. Although the comic book stories is not well known the mythical aspect was and that's what drives this film. Some good comic lines - another solid role for Portman and we get introduced to another Hemsworth boy - quickly becoming the next Baldwin brother but much, much better looking and talented! Sci-fi & fantasy buffs- definately worth seeing & don't forget to wait till the end for the Avengers invitation scene.

While still worth a viewing(especially if your a massive comic book movie mark, like myself, I can't help but feel a little disappointed by Thor. While still competent, It merely offers the stripped down basic super hero story that I taught we had moved on from.

I did not think this was that amazing, with such a good cast for an action film, it just failed to deliver as far as i was concerned, i got bored half way through it and i knew exactly how the film was going to pan out, just lame writing and crap jokes too

Hemsworth did a good job as the cute, built, arrogant and slightly dopey God of Thunder, that becomes a whimp throughout after meeting a woeful Portman. (She should either get naked or get off the camera - did she win an Oscar? Really?) Even story, not needing much to any brain power, some dodgy CGI that made for a rushed looking city of the gods, which had few gods roaming about. Sprinkle in some annoying camera angle - If I tilt the camera, the scene will seem more dramatic and emotional - and add unnecessary 3D, wham bam... The worst of the Avengers film. Needed more back story, including hammer time!

I was blown away by this movie. It has a great cast, and every character, even the minor characters, is given a chance to shine with good dialogue and development. Branagh doesn't sacrifice action scenes for drama, or vice versa. The world of Asgard is beautifully rendered and succeeds in looking like no other fantasy setting I've seen in films. Highly recommended.

I was excited about this from the moment Branagh got linked to it. While not his normal fare I really felt that he would do something special with the God of Thunder. I was so right. I never had any doubts that this movie would deliver and as the cast list was announced the situation just got better and better. While I think it was a big waste of time to render this movie in 3D I have to say the movie itself holds up well and surpasses many of the previous Marvel movies. The characters get a great introduction and it isn't long before we see a great action sequence and the background to the whole movie is set up. The cast is strong and all pull off great performances, no doubt with the aid of Branagh. Hemsworth is excellent as Thor, can't believe he was in Home in Away. Hopkins and Portman have relatively small roles but play their parts with their usual zeal. Dennings helps out with some one liners along the way also. This is an enjoyable movie whether you are a fan of the character or not, definitely worth a look.

Good, entertaining action movie and for once they got the balance right with the "love story" (i.e. it's not a sappy thing thrown in your face all the time. hallelujah!), because if you go to see a super-hero / action movie it is not because of the love story, is it? Anyhow, good action sequences, very entertaining characters (Hiddelston's Loki is the perfect God of Mischief), funny moments and for the geek's (like myself) plenty of things thrown in to get excited about. I would definitely go to see a sequel of this. Hopefully the first of a few good summer action / super hero movies. Hint: As usual, stay till after the credits. ;-)
